Did You Know

We met Max, Jules, and Annie on S. Kihei Road for our walk and coffee - our last visit with them and our last visit with Annie until April - she is off on an adventure with Craig and "the cats". What a time they are going to have.

But back to Maui, we left them at the corner of Walaka and S. Kihei for our breakfast at the condo and discussion on what to do for the rest of the day - I googled flights to Oahu and hotels there - not bad pricing - we figured $800 by the time we added in car - food etc. Not bad but oh what we could do with that cash. Hmmmm we have a reno waiting for us and our practicality set in. So we decided to head out and see some new sights.

Pa'ia here we come - it is definitely a tourist place. Lots of old wooden buildings, lots of fabulous art work, lots of restaurants. It was nice walking around looking in the art galleries but oh so expensive. If only I had won the lotto. I fell in love with some of the carvings made out of exotic woods and one artist in particular - Ed Lane - I love his work - the colours are bright and the style is simple and clean.

I loved the pieces that we saw at the Maui Crafts Guild all of the artists that are featured in this store are from the Pa'ia area.

We did buy some trinkets - Mike, a T-shirt, and a
Hawaiian license plate vintage 1981 with the starting letters - MAW - Geri - a Hawaiian shirt, and some buttons made out of coconut shell and shaped like turtles. I spent quite a bit of time in a shop called the Jewelry Bar - the shop had other merchandise but the feature attraction was a "bar" set up with containers of semi-precious stones and shells that are prewired for making into jewelry of your creation.

Maui Dharma Center

We wondered through most of the centre of town then decided it was beach time - and drove to find a beach. We parked at the Pa'ia Youth Centre - the waves were fabulous and other than a few surfers the beach was empty. While we were there we saw a large cargo ship leave the harbour at Kahului and 5 planes leaving with their compliment of tourist heading home.

SO NOW DID YOU KNOW?

The population of Maui on February 16th 2012 is approximately 147,507. (Extrapolated from a population of 117,644 on October 7th 2008 and a population of 144,444 on September 25th 2011.)

The island of Maui, the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles (1883.5 km²) and is the 17th largest island in the United States.

Maui is known as the "Valley Isle" and its long stretches of beaches and the Haleakala Crater - "the House of the Sun". It is the breeding ground for the Humpback Whale - that winters in Maui before it returns to Alaska - OH just like the rest of us.
